Obituary for Bruce Barnes

Bruce Barnes passed away on November 13th, 2017. He was born December 9th , 1931 in Joliet, Illinois to Sanger and Ruth Barnes, the youngest of four boys. He served with the U.S. Navy in Cuba from 1950 to 1955 where he was trained as a meteorologist. Following his service with the navy, he joined the U.S. Weather Service. While with the weather service, he had varied and interesting assignments, such as working for a year at the North Pole among the eskimos, working on the Caribbean island of San Salvador tracking missiles sent from Cape Canaveral down the Atlantic missile range, on Wake Island in the Pacific during the Vietnam war, as well as weather work in the states of Missouri, Nebraska. and Minnesota. He was in charge of the weather bureau in Maui, Hawaii and had the privilege of working alongside the lepers on Molokai. Because of his help establishing the first Samoan weather bureau in American Samoa, he was named an honorary Samoan chief. Following retirement from the weather service, he spent his remaining years fishing and enjoying the beauty of Wisconsin and Arizona, working with disabled children with the Shriners in Wisconsin, and with the food shelf of St. Vincent de Paul in Arizona. For all his busy and happy life, his greatest joy has been the love of his wife, Joan, and seeing the love and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Bruce will be greatly missed by Joan, his four children, Constance Nacua (Jerry), Jon (Sandra), Mark (Ladean), and Daniel ( Rebecca) and by his eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
