Mabel Gimbel (Timm)
Mabel Ernestine (nee Timm) Gimbel was born near Auroraville, WI, on May 22, 1930, to Carl and Lona Timm. Mabel was baptized, confirmed, and married at rural Immanuel Lutheran Church (LCMS), across the road from her father’s farm. After graduating from Waushara High School in Berlin in 1948 and working locally for a year, she attended Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest, IL, and was certified as a Lutheran Teacher. She taught at St. Peter Lutheran School, Westgate, IA, in a class that included the nephew of John Gimbel, a young farmer from South Dakota. They were married on June 1, 1952, and settled in Iowa. They moved around Iowa and into Minnesota to follow farm jobs. Rebecca, Ruthann, James, and Paul were added to their family. Mabel taught for five years at St. John Lutheran School, Good Thunder, MN. In October, 1977, with kids out of the house, Mabel and John moved to Concordia College, Milwaukee where Mabel worked in the kitchen and John was Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. In 1981 they began serving as Bethesda Lutheran group home as hosts for six adults in Greenfield, WI. In 1984 Mabel began doing home health care while John worked at the West Allis Senior Citizens Center. Both retired completely in 1997, where they shared a role as managers of an apartment complex where they lived. In 2003 they relocated to Sun City, AZ, and moved to Sierra Winds in June, 2016. Mabel was an avid reader, and she and John were dedicated students of the Bible and willing servants at many Church activities. They always worked very hard, and remained very active and faithful in their LCMS churches. They had an active devotional and prayer life, and modeled piety, sincerity, truth, trustfulness, and sacrificial giving, supporting many Christian charities. Their home was full of love and lots of laughter and joy. Mabel loved to give hugs and would often hold the hand of someone she was listening to. She loved her life, was devoted to John and her family, and loved Jesus above all. She died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Mabel is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, grandson Howie Nachtigall, and numerous children miscarried by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by John, husband of 65 years, who shared all ventures and adventures as a united couple; also their children Becky (Paul) Shaw [with Anna and Zach van Vleet & RonEn, Andrew, Christina and John]; Ruthann; Jim (Jill) [with Andy and Laura & Miriam & Lila & Willa, Abby and Seth Brashear & Silas & Iggy, Jo and Gavin Nachtigall & Lionheart]; and Paul (Karen)[with Jared, Jon and Jill & Hayes, Jessi and Tim Wittig & Jayden & Ryleigh & Logan] . She was cherished and will be deeply missed, but both her life and her NEW LIFE with Jesus are great causes for celebration. Her life goal was to reflect Christ in life and at death; the family thanks God for her and for making her His own dear child. A memorial service is at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church, 15630 N. Del Webb Blvd, in Sun City, AZ 85351. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that money be donated to Lutheran Bible Translators (205 South Main Street, Concordia, MO 64020) or the Lutheran Hour Ministries (660 Mason Ridge Center, St. Louis, MO 63141).
