Obituary for John Ehlers Madsen

John Ehlers Madsen
John Ehlers Madsen, 84, passed away on January 15, 2018 in Sun City, AZ surrounded by friends and family. John was born on October 15, 1933 in Aarhus, Denmark to Kristian and Dagmar Madsen (Larsen). He was educated in Denmark, including trade school and an apprenticeship to be a machinist before joining the Danish Navy. At 21 years old, John made the decision to immigrate to the United States, a decision he was always proud of. In 1958, he married Kolbjørg Eian, and together they raised their family in the Seattle area. John played a leading role in bringing junior girls’ soccer to the Northwest in the 1970s and coached for many years. He was a proud member of the Sons of Norway at the Leif Eriksen lodge, and spent time singing in the Norwegians Male Chorus. In 1982, he found sobriety. Shortly thereafter, his son, Roy, introduced him to golf which became a passion and joy for the rest of his life. In 2000, John lost Kolbjørg to cancer. John met Gail and they wed in 2003, eventually moving down to Sun City, AZ where they both enjoyed many years with friends, golf and fellowship.

John was preceded in death by his daughter Mona, wife Kolbjørg, and sister Jonna. He is survived by his wife Gail, children Heidi, Roy, Shannon, Terrie and Tony, grandchildren Nadine, Christopher, Hannah, Heather, Kaylee and Myles, and great grandchildren Taylor, Katelyn, Hayden, Megyn and Raelyn.

A service will be held in Sun City, AZ on Wednesday January 24th at All Saints of the Desert Church from 10:30-1:00, with a service to follow in WA in mid-February.
