Wilma Ruth Accardo, daughter of James and Dorothy Ellis, passed away June 10, 2020 at the age of 88. Ruth was born January 25, 1932 on a farm near Palestine, Illinois where she was raised. She was a graduate of Bradley University where she met her husband, Joseph Ernest Accardo. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1960. This August would have been their 66th wedding anniversary.

Ruth was an artist at heart. She loved painting in her youth and designing intricate quilts when she was older. Before retiring to care for her mother, Ruth was a small business owner; starting with a dance studio and eventually having an antique store called Cameo Antiques. She also loved to read and no one could resist her cooking.

She is survived by her husband Joe, daughters Kerrie and Jami, and grandsons Aaron, Glen, and Micah. She was preceded in death by her siblings Robert, Carol, and Gilbert.

Aunt Ruth was beautiful. You could see the beauty of her soul in her smile. She was kind and helpful, and resourceful. She shared a lot about her life.

Although we lived far apart, I knew her growing up because they visited summers, often hauling a trailer to bring things back. My husband and I lived near them when he went to school there. She told me my grandfather went into the back yard one day and started digging. She put his energy to use. She came up with a design for an inground pool. A fig tree grew at one end. She made cookies by wrapping a fig in dough. I went to the Biltmore House with the family when they were in Asheville. She knew every piece in the house. That’s when I realized she had read the wall of antique books I had seen in her house.

My sister and I were fortunate to visit a few years ago. We thank our cousins for helping make it work. I will treasure that time always.
