Dear Mike, Heather told me of Pam's death. She said that she had texted Pam about a prospective trip to Arizona and later received your text about Pam's unexpected death. My deepest sympathy. I met Pam in the Master Naturalist program. You and Pam were married 41 years, yet when I saw you together, I felt you were like newlyweds because you were so attentive to each other, on the same wavelength. My husband John and I have been married for 40 years and while his health is poor, it is still difficult to imagine life without him. Heather, Martha Steele and I came to your home in Del Webb twice to rescue Lace cacti. What a treat! In addition to the hike, digging work, and clear detailed narratives about cacti characteristics and retrieval from Pam the Teacher, we enjoyed your home surroundings. The native plants everywhere, demonstration gardens, trials and successes in landscape and pots! And what hospitality. Of course, Pam was one of those people who just stood out...outstanding the field... in many senses of the words. Her obituary says it too. I was wowed reading it and it gave me insight into the many things she said while I was in her company. Heather, Martha and I shared stories about Pam. This was mine. I had asked for a ride to the King Ranch at the last minute, and Pam said I hitch a ride. When we met up at the designated spot on the southside, she confronted me outside the car. She said, if you are a Trump person, you best not ride in this car. I responded, if you are I Trump person, I would rather not ride in your car. I was surprised at her boldness, but relieved, too. I felt sorry for you driving all that way, and listening to us go on and on about our dismay, displeasure and despondency over that reign of terror. You barely got a word in edgewise! I wear a small mockingbird pin on my hat (which I wear most of the time in sunny Texas) from the King Ranch gift store . People often comment how cute it is, or it is the state bird of Texas and I'm reminded of that trip. As we drove along those roads at the King Ranch, Pam gave her own tour--Pam's keen eye for seeing things I missed. Seeing birds, naming birds and using binoculars like they were glued to her inquisitive sight. I am sad about Pam's loss. Her comments about communicating with previous students and insights from this or that generation told me she kept in touch-- in touch in a way that was personal, but profound, like integrating those pieces of opinions and info into a giant map of sentiment and history of our present culture and politics. I knew her briefly, but she will be remembered well. Wishing you comfort and ease as you grieve this outstanding woman.
