Doris Grow

Obituary of Doris Audrey Grow

Doris A. Grow passed away peacefully on April 21, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona, after a short illness, at the age of 99.

Born, April 21, 1924, in Jackson, Ohio, Doris Audrey Freeland, was the youngest of seven children of Elias Edward Freeland and Mattie Luvena Simpson.  Doris married the love of her life, Marion Denver "Denny" Grow on December 6, 1946, who preceded her in death on November 26, 1992.

Doris is survived by her two children, son, Larry L. Grow (Linda and daughter, Teresa E. Filleman (John) and grandchildren; Brian Grow (Bryant Dobbs), Angels Petersen (John), John Wesley Filleman (Miranda), Scott Filleman (Dara) and five great-grandchildren.

Doris graduated from Jackson Hight School in 1942.  Over her life, in addition to being a wonderful spouse and mother, she held a variety of jobs including working in the offices of National Fireworks Company during WWII and working in Jackson, Ohio drug store.  Later she worked part-time at the soda fountain at Birnie's Drug Store, in Worthington, Ohio.  Moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1964, Doris had a long career working at Lou Ann's Dress Shop in Uptown Plaza where she made many wonderful friends.  Doris and Denny were active in Cross Roads United Methodist Church for many years, working with the youth choir and helping with performance tours.

Doris was an avid quilter and for many years she made one or two quilts per year, all done by hand.  These quilts, as expressions of Doris' love of family and friends, are treasured by all who received them.  As the youngest child in their family and for many years the last surviving sibling, Doris made every effort to stay in touch with nieces and nephews from both sides of the family.  She made sure the extended family stayed in contact and believed that family was important.  Doris rarely missed the opportunity to send birthday or anniversary cards and it was not uncommon to receive a phone call from Doris and hear her singing "Happy Birthday" on those special days.

No services have been planned a memorial letter will be communicated to family and friends in the near future.

The family is thankful for the kindness and care that Doris received from Hospice of the Valley and would ask that in lieu of flowers or other memorials that donations be made to Hospice of the valley, 1510 E Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ  85014.
