Sam, Today is another step in healing. You and Leo were so happy together. I remember hearing all about Leo before Alex and I finally had the pleasure of meeting him in Chicago around 1995-96. I saw you at your happiest being with Leo - you were definitely ‘in love'. He was there for you during your trials and tribulations in life and you were there for him until the end. In the last few years when we would talk, I always enjoyed saying ‘hello' to Leo… what a witty and charming man ! Today you said your final good-bye, but just remember he will always be in your heart. I know people always say this…. but having experienced my own loss, I can verify that it is true. Know that I am only a phone call away anytime you want to talk. I wish I could have been there for you today. With love

Dearest Sam, it is difficult to put our feelings into words. Leo was an extraordinary person and an extraordinary friend. He was characterized by unbounded generosity of mind and spirit. He was unfailingly receptive to diverse persons and ideas. He was a true listener, filled with curiosity, an uncommon thing. He had no prejudice against any walk of life. He was devoted to the most rigorous thinking about literature, art, and movies, for which he was justly celebrated; but he was also-much to our great enjoyment over the years--equally devoted to affable sociability and fun. He embraced the totality of life. He traveled its various realms with grace and courage. Following the AIDS crisis, in his book Homos he stood up for the unruly wildness of gay life as well as the dignity of gay identity. Throughout his career, especially in his last two books, Leo emphasized the blessed interrelations that underlie things. We learned from him. Because of Covid, we were deprived of his (and your) company for the past two years. We grieved that loss. We hoped, though, to get together again soon. Now we grieve his death. His books and our cherished memories of the dinners, the lunches, the quiet times we spent together will keep us connected. As will our love for you, Sam. It is a true consolation to know that Leo had you at his side. Let's hope we can get together before too long to share some Thai food. Love, Robert and Kris

Sam, I loved Leo. I loved Leo's sweetness, his calm and gentle demeanor, his upbeat manner, and his love of a good Key Lime pie! It was so much fun to have him tease us when you and I would talk and gossip on the phone and he would listen to our conversations voicing his own opinions! I loved how Leo was revered in Zach's eyes. Thank you for the honor of allowing us to be with Leo during his final days. In my heart I know that Leo's last thoughts and feelings were of his absolute love and devotion to you. Leo will forever be carried in my heart, and I will miss him.

Dear Sam, Kind, gentle, brilliant, funny, these are attributes all who knew Leo ascribe to him. This plus his affability and grace epitomizes all that was good about this extraordinary man. But one must also remember how good you were for him and how much care, compassion and love you provided. Leo's death leaves many holes but his life with you also provides guidance for us all. He will be missed. Love to you.

Leo was a light in the sky, who illuminated everything to which he turned his capacious heart and mind. He was beautiful in body and soul. I will go on learning from him and missing him forever. And dearest Sam, I watched your love, care and patience, especially during that last in December 2019, when I was so lucky to see you both just before Covid struck, and to spend the briefest time in the life you had made for each other and your beloved Zach. With my deepest love on this painful day.

Leo was a dear and kind man, exemplary of a true gentleman. A lot will be said about his literary contributions; but he will also be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of wine and fabulous french cheeses, his sweet tooth and his dog Zack. Most of all he will be remembered for the deep and abiding love he had for Sam Geraci. I will miss Leo forever.
